How do I Change Providers with a BlackBerry 8830?

The BlackBerry 8830 is a feature-rich smartphone capable of operating on international GSM networks. If you purchased your device directly from your wireless carrier, the phone is locked and can only be used on the network it is branded for. When you're ready to move on and find a new provider but aren't willing to part with your beloved BlackBerry, there is a solution. You'll need the unlock code for your device before you can activate it with a new company.

Instructions

Obtain the Unlock Code

    1

Locate the IMEI of your BlackBerry 8830 device. This device-specific number is listed in several places. You can find it in the phone's menu by scrolling to "Options," then clicking "Status." The IMEI will also be listed on a sticker beneath the battery. Slide the battery door off your phone and pull out the battery to see the sticker. If you still have the original box your BlackBerry came in, find the label on the box that lists the model number of your phone. The IMEI will be listed here.

    2

Obtain the lock code for your device. There are a couple of ways you can accomplish this. If you're willing to try, you may be able to persuade a customer service representative to provide you with the code that corresponds with your IMEI. If you've been in contract for a while and tell the representative you are planning to travel overseas, he may give you the code without much hassle. If you've canceled your service or just don't want to try negotiating with a representative, continue to the next step for a second option.

    3

Enlist the help of an unlocking service. Popular online unlocking services include CellCorner, GSM Phone Source, Berry Review and GSM Liberty (see Resources for links). Most unlocking services can provide you with your code via e-mail for a nominal fee. Follow the instructions on the website to provide the service with some basic information, including the IMEI of your 8830. It may take a few days to receive your code.

Enter the Unlock Code

    4

Ensure there is a SIM card inserted into your BlackBerry 8830. (The SIM card slot is beneath the phone's battery.) You may use any SIM card during the unlocking procedure. Reinsert the battery and slide the battery door into place, then allow the device to power on. It will turn on automatically unless the battery is dead.

    5

Press the BlackBerry "Menu" key, then use your trackball to scroll to "Settings." Press in the trackball, then scroll to and select "Options." Select "Advanced Options." A new menu will appear. Scroll to and select "SIM Card."

    6

Type the letters "MEPD" using your phone's keypad. The letters will not appear on the screen. A "hidden" menu displaying SIM Card Security will appear. Press and hold the "ALT" key and use the keypad to type the letters "MEPE" while holding "ALT." Release "ALT" when you finish typing the required letters.

    7

Enter the code you were given when you see the "Enter Network MEP Code" message. Press in the trackball to confirm your entry. Your BlackBerry is now unlocked. Press the "End" key to return to the main screen.

    8

Contact a new service provider to port your existing phone number, if desired. When you sign up for service, inform the provider that you will be using a BlackBerry you already own. You will be given an appropriate service plan and SIM card. Insert the card into your device to start using it.
