How to Optimize SlideShare for Traffic

SlideShare is a website that allows users to upload files and share them with anyone over the Internet. SlideShare receives over 50 million monthly visitors (as of 2011), many of whom find files on the site directly through search engines. Optimizing your SlideShare files to capture search engine traffic more effectively can greatly increase their overall visitors. If you have files already uploaded on SlideShare, optimize them by making just a few small changes.

Instructions

    1

Log in to your SlideShare account and select the "My Uploads" item from the drop-down menu that appears when you hover over your user name on the upper right-hand side of the screen.

    2

Find the file you would like to optimize from your list of uploaded files and select the "Edit / Delete" link.

    3

Enter a title for your file in the "Title" text box. Consider the information covered in your file and what sorts of queries search engine users might be entering for which your file would be helpful. For example, if your file details how to train a dog, name your file something that people are actively searching for on search engines, such as "Dog Training" or "Dog Obedience" rather than "How To Train Fluffy." Optimizing your title in this way will make your file more likely to appear in search engines.

    4

Add a dash or a pipe character followed by a brief but compelling description of your file's contents after the first part of your file's title. For example, if you chose "Dog Training" as your title, add a pipe character (""), followed by "How to get your dog to behave in five easy steps." Search engine users will see your full title, so it's important to make it descriptive so users are more likely to navigate to it instead of a different search result.

    5

Enter a description for your file in the "Description" text box. Write a description that appeals to your potential readers and arouses their curiosity. For example, write "Discover the five secret tips that will get your dog to obey you in seven days or sooner" instead of "This is a guide on how to train your dog." Again, an attractive description will make users more likely to want to open your file.

    6

Select an appropriate category for your file from the menu marked "Choose Category" and enter keywords for your file in the text box marked "Tags." For example, if your file covers dog training, choose "Education" as your category, and enter keywords such as "dog training," "dog obedience" and "dog education." Although your choices here will not influence your position on the search engines, well-chosen tags and a category may increase your internal traffic from SlideShare, as users sometimes browse by category or tag.

    7

Click on the "Update" button at the bottom of the page to save the changes made to your document.
