IMVU is a free 3-D chat client where people use avatars to socially connect. It is used internationally by people 13 years of age and older. Like a social networking site, IMVU allows their users to maintain profiles, play and create flash-based games and chat with friends from all over the world. While using IMVU is free, there are options to upgrade and take advantage of other offerings such as the Access Pass and VIP club.

Download the chat client from IMVU's website. After the download is finished, install the program to your computer using the automatic settings on the installation wizard.
2Log in and load the main screen.
3Dress up avatar by selecting the "Dress up" option. Here, a compartmentalized inventory is available to easily dress avatars. IMVU offers thousands of user-created products that are for sale in the catalog.
4Chat by clicking on the "Chat room" option. Search for chat rooms based on size, language and type or by typing keywords. Here, users chat with the over 50 million other users. Private chats are conducted between two people in private rooms. This type of chatting is also available by selecting the "Chat now" option.
5Create a 3-D room by clicking on the "My room" option. Rooms are personalized with scenes and furniture that are available in the catalog. The catalog offers rooms in every style and genre from goth industrial clubs to tea parlors.
Shop and Create

Buy or earn credits. This is the currency that IMVU uses to allow users to buy new items. IMVU provides 1,000 credits with registration, but additional credits will provide a much more interesting experience.
7Shop for new items by selecting the "Shop" option on the main screen. Here, users browse and search for times to dress their avatars or decorate their rooms.
8Users with ability in creating textures or meshes for 3-D items are invited to join the creator program. Their creations are what drive this virtual world with over 7,000 items added every day.
Other Uses

Play games by selecting "Games" on the chat client or the website. IMVU offers several games that can be played alone or with friends. These games come from a partnership with Viximo and OMGPOP and include titles like Fishdom, Backyard Monsters and Ravenwood Fair.
10Join or create groups. Users can search for groups based on their personal interests on the website. There are groups for every fan, hobby and culture in the world.
11Use Pulse. Pulse is a system where users update their status for their friends to see what is going on.
12Enter daily challenge contests on the website. Every day IMVU creates a theme for users to dress their avatars in. Users create outfits based on the theme and submit them to the daily challenge. Throughout the day, users vote on the outfits.
