Problem With a State of Illinois Tax Return

Tax return problems can come in many forms. Often, a return has already been submitted when the taxpayer realizes he or she has made a mistake. Errors can also be technical in nature, especially when using an electronic, or e-file program or site. Problems can happen during the filing of the return, preventing the taxpayer from submitting the return, or the return can be rejected. Sometimes, due to no fault on the part of the taxpayer, a refund is not received when expected. Here are solutions to these problems.

Taxpayer Error on Return

If you have made a mistake on your Illinois tax return, even if filed electronically, you must submit a paper form IL-1040X to amend it. This form can be accessed at http://tax.illinois.gov/taxforms/Incm2008/Individual/IL-1040-X.pdf. See the instructions at http://tax.illinois.gov/taxforms/Incm2008/Individual/IL-1040-X-Instr.pdf.

Problem with Electronic Filing

Taxpayers who file electronically using a third-party vendor must contact the company that handled the filing regarding any technical errors. If the technical problem occurred while filing directly through the State of Illinois website, view the following URL to choose the most accurate answer for your situation: http://taxhelp.illinois.gov/cgi-bin/idor.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php. Enter the keyword "webfile."
