With the expanding use of technology and employer efforts to save costs, many of these jobs, such as medical coding, can be done from home via the Internet. Here's how to become a medical coder online.

Get trained and certified. Contact your local community college about courses in medical billing. Coursework will cover medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data requirements and standards, clinical classification and coding systems and health care reimbursement methods. Avoid correspondence or online courses that promise you a job when you finish. Many of these are scams.
2Get experience. Many online medical coding jobs will require that you have experience in medical coding. Search for jobs in your local area at clinics, hospitals and doctor's offices to gain experience. Some places may allow you to work at home after a six-month on-site probationary period.
3Obtain needed equipment. Most companies will not supply you with a computer or other equipment. Make sure you have a quality computer with high speed Internet. Have any needed reference books available as well.
4Search for medical coding jobs online. Visit job search sites such as Careerbuilder.com or HealthJobsUSA.com for medical coding work. Search for "medical coding" and leave the location open as many online-based medical coding jobs don't require you to live near the facility. Narrow your search by including keyword terms such as "work at home" or "telecommute" to identify the medical coding jobs that can be done off-site.
5Submit a professional resume or application. Think of your submission as a marketing brochure, not simply a list of your experience. Tailor the resume to fit the job as much as possible. Use active verbs and descriptive words.
6Provide quality work in a timely manner. While you can work from home as a medical coder, you'll still be accountable to an employer or client. Your success will be determined on the quality and timeliness of your work.
