How to Use eMule

The open-source program eMule is used by millions of people worldwide to share all sorts of digital files, predominantly music, video, pictures and software. It is free to download and easy to install, and once you configure it properly, you can use it to search for available content provided by the worldwide pool of millions of users.

Instructions

    1

Download the eMule installation file. A link to the download location is in the Resources section.

    2

Double-click the installation file after it has finished downloading to launch the Setup Wizard. On the Setup Wizard welcome screen, click the "Next" button.

    3

Enter a user name in the blank on the first configuration screen. You can also configure eMule to launch automatically, if you desire, by checking the boxes on this screen. When you're done, click the "Next" button.

    4

Check the box next to "Use UPnP to Set Up Ports" if you are using either a router or a firewall on your computer. If not, leave this unchecked. Then click the "Test Ports" button and wait for the test to conclude. After this, click the "Next" button.

    5

Look over the network settings on the final screen. The default settings that are preselected are optimal for most systems, but if you have an exceptionally slow or unreliable Internet connection, you may want to uncheck the "Kad Network" option. Click the "Next" button when you are ready to proceed.

    6

Wait as the software installs. When the installation is complete, you will see an alert window that says the installation was a success and that asks you if you would like to launch eMule right away. Click the "Yes" button.

    7

Click the "Connect" button in the top-left corner of the window. This button has a yellow lightning bolt icon. After you do this, watch the small globe icon with the two arrows on it. Wait for at least one arrow to turn either yellow or green, signifying that you have connected to one or more networks, before proceeding.

    8

Click the "Search" button on the toolbar at the top of the window. On the "Search" screen, enter a search term for something you'd like to download in the keyword field, and click the "Search" button next to it. Review the search results. If you see something you'd like to download, click the "Download" button next to it. There is no need to specify a file path for the download.

    9

Click the "Transfers" button on the toolbar at the top of the window. In this window, you can watch and track the progress of your downloads. When a download status bar for a particular file reaches 100 percent, that download is complete and the file is accessible on your hard drive. As soon as a file begins downloading, the portions of the file that you've already downloaded become available for upload so that the other members of the eMule community can download it. This cannot be disabled while your file is still downloading. Your active uploading files can also be tracked in the "Transfers" panel.

    10

Right-click on the "Start" button in Windows and select "Explore" after one or more of your downloads has finished. In the left-side panel, navigate to C:\Program Files\eMule\Incoming. Then, in the right-side panel, you will be able to view all files that have been downloaded or that are in the process of downloading. Files that have finished downloading will be accessible right away, but the others must finish downloading before they can be opened.

    11

Click and drag fully downloaded files out of the "Incoming" folder if and when you no longer want to share them with the eMule community. Once this is done, you will no longer be sharing those files. By the same token, any files you drag and drop into the "Incoming" folder will be made accessible to the eMule community, even if you did not originally download them using eMule. You cannot remove a file from the "Incoming" folder if it is being actively uploaded through eMule; if you attempt to move a file out of the folder and see a warning that the file cannot be moved because it is in use, simply shut down eMule and then move the file. After that, you can relaunch eMule, and the file will not appear in your upload transfer list.
