How to Use an Internet PPT

There are more than eight different PowerPoint file types. These file types handle multiple types of PowerPoint applications and configurations. The .PPTX file extension, for example, refers to XML-enabled presentations. The .PPT extension describes PowerPoint 97 to PowerPoint 2003 files. The Internet contains free PPT files covering a variety of instructional and entertainment topics. View them using your browser or save them to your hard drive and open them later.

Install PowerPoint Viewer

    Proceed to the next section if you already have the PowerPoint application or the PowerPoint Viewer installed on your computer.

    Visit the download website listed in Resources and review the details about the PowerPoint Viewer.

    Click "Download." A window will prompt you to save the file. If the window does not appear after 30 seconds, click "Start Download" to open the window.

    Click "Save" to download the file to your hard drive.

    Locate the file after it downloads and double-click it. A wizard will guide you through the installation process.

Locate Internet PPT Files

    Visit a search engine such as Google or Bing.

    Enter the following query in the search box:

    Filetype:ppt abc

    Replace "abc" with a topic that interests you. For example, to search for PowerPoint files about planets, type "Filetype:ppt planets" (without the quotes).

    Click the browser's "Search" button. The search engine will return a list of results.

Download and View

    Click one of the search results. A window will open and prompt you to open or save the PPT file.

    Click "Save." The browser will save the file to your download folder.

    Open Windows Explorer and locate the file. Double-click the file to open it.

View in Browser

    Click one of the search results. A window will open and prompt you to open or save the PPT file.

    Click "Open with."

    Click the drop-down box next to "Open with" and select "Microsoft PowerPoint" to view it using PowerPoint. To view it using the PowerPoint Viewer, select "Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer" instead. The PowerPoint presentation will open in the application that you select.
