How to Connect RootsWeb World

RootsWeb is an Internet-based genealogy hub with free tools that help you locate and share genealogy information and communicate with others from around the world who are researching their family's past. On RootsWeb you can access a wide array of genealogical research, websites and projects and even create your own free genealogical website. The WorldConnect project is one aspect of RootsWeb. Through it, you can search family trees worldwide for general genealogy information, access the contact information of others who have uploaded to the database and upload your own family tree.

Search Family Trees

Pick a search parameter: surname, given name or both; specific database; database by keyword or database by surname(s).

Enter a term into a field and then click "Go" to search WorldConnect and see databases that may have the information you are seeking. With the database by keyword search, the main results screen will show you email addresses you can use to contact creators of specific databases.

Perform an advanced search at any time by clicking the "Advanced Search" link. Enter as many details as possible into the search fields to narrow your search such as a surname, given name, birth place, birth year, death place, death year, marriage place, marriage year, father, mother or spouse. In addition, you can specify whether you want to see search results that include descendants, notes, sources or search results in a specific timeframe. When finished, click the "Search" button.

Upload Family Tree

Click the "Start Here" link in the Submit Your Family Tree to WorldConnect area.

Enter your user name and password and sign in to your RootsWeb account. If you have an Ancestry.com or Family.com account, enter your user name and password for that account. If you do not have one of these account types, click the "Register" button and follow the on-screen instructions to create an account.

Follow the three-step process to add a family tree to WorldConnect. This includes creating a tree ID and title, converting your tree database file and then uploading it to WorldConnect.
