How to Manually Install Any Search Provider in IE8

Adding a new search provider to Internet Explorer 8 is not a difficult task. By default, the browser will take you to a Microsoft website that displays a limited selection of search engines. If your favorite search engine is not displayed here, don't dismay -- with a few quick steps, you can configure Internet Explorer 8 to add virtually any search engine to your available list of search providers.

Instructions

    1

Launch Internet Explorer 8. Click the arrow on the right edge of the search field in the upper right corner of the browser window, then click "Find More Providers" from the drop-down menu. Microsoft's "Add Search Providers to Internet Explorer" page opens. Click the name of any search engine displayed to add it to Internet Explorer. If you do not see the search engine that you want to use, go on to the next step.

    2

Press "Ctrl" and "T" simultaneously to open a new browser tab. Type the URL of the desired search engine in the browser's address bar and then press "Enter" to display the page.

    3

Type the word "TEST" (without quotes) using all capital letters into the search field as if you were performing a keyword search. Press "Enter."

    4

Click the address bar at the top of the Internet Explorer window to highlight its contents and then press your "Ctrl" and "X" keys simultaneously to copy the contents of the browser's address bar to the Windows clipboard.

    5

Return to the previous browser tab. Right-click the field below "Step 3" in the yellow box on the right side of the page and select "Paste" to paste the URL from the Windows clipboard.

    6

Click the field under "Step 4" on the Web page and type the name of the search engine.

    7

    Click the "Install" button.

    8

    Click the "Add Provider" button.

    9

Click the arrow next to the search field in the upper right corner of the browser window. Click the name of the search engine that you added to begin using it.
